Obituary for Doralice A. "Dory" Butterfield (Sawyer)

Jay – Doralice A. “Dory” Butterfield, 87, of Jay, passed away on Sunday, September 25, 2022, at her home in Jay. She was born on June 11, 1935, in Camden, the daughter of Louis and Adelaide (Holt) Sawyer. She was a graduate of Camden High School and went on to receive her bachelor’s degree in Education at the Farmington State Teachers College, now University of Maine Farmington. She taught U.S. Service men and women’s children on U.S. Air Force bases in Europe and later continued teaching at bases all over the world. She continued teaching in Maine as a third-grade teacher at Jay Elementary School and as a Resource Teacher. On September 25, 1965, she married Allen Butterfield. They were married for 45 years before his passing on December 26, 2010.Dory was a member of the Maine Teachers Association and a former member of the VFW Auxiliary. She is survived by her children, Victor Butterfield of Jay, Sue Gallogly and husband William of Cranston, Rhode Island, Bryce Butterfield and wife Tracey of Jay, Barry Butterfield of Littleton, New, Hampshire, and Julie Fields of West Townsend, Massachusetts, her sister Olive Dufresne of Hope, 14 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Allen Butterfield, her brother Irving (Sonny) Sawyer, and her grandchild Nikki Butterfield. “You’ve all made my relationships very meaningful and special.
