Obituary for George William "Bill" Allen
Livermore Falls – George William “Bill” Allen, 84, of Livermore Falls, ME passed away on April 16, 2023, after a long battle with cancer. He died peacefully at home, surrounded by family. Bill, known to some locals as “The Professor” and to his former students as “Doc Allen,” was born in Livermore falls on August 4, 1938, to Raymond and Delena (Castonguay) Allen. He spent much of his childhood in the Portland Area, returning to Livermore Falls in 1953 when his family purchased a 1700's era working farm. Bill was a 1957 graduate of Livermore Falls High School, and attended the University of Maine at Orono, where he attained Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees in engineering and physics.
While working as a young engineer in North Adams, Massachusetts, Bill was set up on a blind date with Patricia “Pat” Prenguber, a local girl home for the summer from UMass Amherst. Pat and Bill fell in love that summer and were married on June 12,1965.
Bill's professional passions centered on education. During his decades long career, he taught a variety of science and mathematics courses at the University of Maine's Orono and Farmington campuses, Nasson College (Springdale, ME), Bonney Eagle High School (Standish, ME), and Maine Maritime Academy (Castine, ME). Outside of education, Bill worked as a physicist at Fort Belvoir in the Washington DC area, and as an energy auditor for the State of Maine Education Department.
In 1978, after several relocations, Bill returned to his Livermore Falls homestead to raise his family. While living at "the farm" Bill was able to spend time enjoying carpentry, cabinetry, and auto mechanics. An avid life-long learner, Bill continued to read science journals and college textbooks into his 80's. He will be remembered for his tremendous work ethic, enduring physical strength, sense of humor, generosity, fierce love of animals, fiery temper, and perpetual readiness for a hearty debate, but most of all as a loyal friend, father, and husband.
He is survived by his loving wife Pat; his children, Carolee (Stewart) Carlin of Memphis, TN and Brad (Sandy) Allen of Albany, NY; and his four grandchildren, Will Carlin of Portsmouth, NH, Cat Carlin of Memphis, TN, and Camden and Xander Allen of Albany, NY.
