Obituary for James L. Lufkin

Lewiston – James L. Lufkin, 79, of Lewiston, passed away peacefully, Friday, March 24, 2023, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born September 14, 1943, in Brewer, the son of Lowell B. Lufkin and Evelyn (Parker) Lufkin. James was a 1961 graduate of Bangor High School and received his bachelor’s degree in music from the Northern Conservatory of Music in Bangor in 1966. James continued his education at the Bangor Theological Seminary, graduating in 1977, and went on to devote his life’s work to ministry for over 40 years at numerous Methodist and Baptist churches throughout the state. On August 14, 1963, he married Kathryn Jean Taylor, in her hometown of West Southport, Maine. He was a man of many interests, from music to art, photography to painting, history to genealogy, computers to technology, and even golf to motorcycling. He greatly enjoyed annual trips to the White Mountains with his wife and, when not working, would often be seen with his camera in hand scouting for the subject of his next painting. Earlier years found him canoeing and fishing with his daughters, camping with his family, or hunting with his father-in-law in the fall. Each adventure he took brought another story to share animatedly and often with great laughter. Having never met a stranger, he was always ready to share a story, joke, or message, and would often strike up a lengthy conversation with someone he’d just met. Described by many as a kind, caring and genuinely good guy to know, he was ready to lend a hand wherever needed. Throughout his career as a music teacher, then pastor, he enthusiastically taught young people, seeking to create programs to guide youth within the community. Later in his career, he mentored new pastors, served on the board of American Baptist Churches of Maine (ABCOM), was active with Lisbon Area Christian Outreach (LACO) Pantry in Lisbon Falls, and taught numerous computer classes for all ages. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Kathryn Lufkin, his three daughters: Cindy Lufkin of Bangor, Vikki DiMarco and her husband Tony of Nashua, NH, and Heidi Thompson and her husband John of Bangor. Jim was also the proud grandfather to Christopher Lehto of Belton, TX, Eric Thompson of Warren, Emily DiMarco of Nashua, NH, Juli Williamson of Nashua, NH, and Jeffrey Thompson of Bangor, as well as great-grandfather of five. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother John H. Lufkin and sister-in-law Charlotte (Billington) Lufkin, and granddaughter Kathryn Ann Williamson. The family would like to thank friends and neighbors, as well as the staff at Central Maine Medical Center (Thompson Wing), and Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice, his church family at Litchfield Plains Baptist Church, and the congregations of his most recent churches, West Bowdoin Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Brooklin.
