Obituary for Jean E. Gilbert (Keene)
Turner – Jean E. (Keene) Gates Gilbert, 92, a resident of Turner, passed away Wednesday, February 23, 2022, at her home in Turner. She was born on June 25, 1929, in Lewiston, Maine, the daughter of Vinton C. and Elizabeth M. (Packard) Keene. Jean attended schools in Buckfield and was a 1947 graduate of Buckfield High School. On August 25, 1947, in Buckfield she married Raymond T. Gates. They were married for 2 years before his passing in 1950. She later met Lauren H. Gilbert, Jr. and they were married on April 11, 1952, in Buckfield. They were married for 35 years before his passing in 1987. Jean was a former member of Buckfield Rescue. She served for a time as a Cub Scout leader as well. She was a Sunday school teacher and a substitute teacher. Jean enjoyed playing the piano and sharing her enjoyment by giving piano lessons. She was always willing to lend a helping hand. She loved to babysit her grandchildren and friends’ children. She also directed many Minstrel Shows and a Family Band. She is survived by her children, Robert V. Gates of Houston, Texas, Barry J. Gates and wife Bobby Jean of Turner, Lauren H. Gilbert, III and wife Janine of Turner, Gerald E. Gilbert and wife Deborah of Turner, and Kathy J. Turner and husband Daniel of Turner, 10 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, husbands, Raymond and Lauren, Jr., her son, Kenneth Leighton Gilbert, her granddaughter, Brandi Nelson, and her daughter-in-law, MaryAnne Gates.
