Obituary for Noella Marie Mercier (Judd)

Lewiston – Noella Marie Mercier, age 99, of Livermore, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 14, 2022, at Marshwood Center in Lewiston. She was born on December 23, 1922, in Chisholm, the daughter of Josephine Lahaie and Chester L. Judd. She attended Livermore Public Schools and Livermore Falls High School. On November 30, 1940, she married Wilfred Mercier at St. Rose of Lima in Jay. Noella lived a long and active life as a wife, mother, grandmother, and musician. She enjoyed cooking and baking, music and dancing, camping and traveling. She worked alongside her husband to establish and manage Mercier Construction Company, which they operated for 24 years. She was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay, where she served as a Eucharistic minister and catechism teacher. She also worked as a volunteer teacher’s aide at Henry L. Cottrell School in Monmouth, where she was lovingly referred to as “Grammy.” Noella came from a large family who loved music. All could sing and/or play a musical instrument (mostly self-taught) and often enjoyed making music together. Noella played the piano, and later in life, with her husband Wilfred and a few musical friends, formed a small band. They called themselves “The Jolly Four,” and shared their toe-tapping music at granges, for senior citizens, and in nursing homes. They could play just about anything from waltzes to polkas, jigs and reels, and country-western, all for free. Noella said, “We do it just for fun, that’s why we’re the Jolly Four.” Noella was a woman of many talents, though where she shined the brightest was in the kitchen. She loved to cook for family and friends. She was a longtime member in the New Norlands Grange, where she served as “The Biscuit Lady” for many years at grange suppers and social gatherings. Her family will fondly remember her scrumptious pies, a baker’s cream chocolate cake only she could get right, and her grandchildren will especially remember a bowl of delicious “Memere Soup.” She is survived by her three daughters: Linda Baillargeon (husband Clement) of Vassalboro, Claudia Marlatt of Lewiston, and Sharon Folker (husband Frank) of Lewiston, her daughter-in-law Anita Mercier of Wells, and nine grandchildren: Mark Lewis of Saco, Anne Lewis of Reading, MA, Marcel Gagnon of Winterport, Gabrielle Wheeler of Lewiston, Wil Mercier of Eddington, Andre Mercier of Kennebunk, Davis Mercier of Gray, James Folker of Auburn, Elizabeth Audet of Greene, twelve great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren; two step-granddaughters Melanie Baillargeon of Augusta, Monique Lemieux of Mt. Vernon, and four step-great-grandsons; two sisters Joan Lauzier of Livermore and Theresa Bilodeau of Livermore Falls, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband in 2005, her beloved son Duane in 2019, and 9 siblings. Messages of condolence may be sent to: www.finleyfuneralhome.com
